Of Rats and Women

I woke up this morning in the mood for celebration. Last night, I was finally able to rid our house of one large and highly intelligent rat.

It is a story that actually goes back years, my history with rats. However, I will make it short and sweet.

This year’s rat moved in sometime in late August, probably through the open back door. We have seen them before, they are attracted by the smell of pet food stored in bins and the garbage can.

In the mornings, we noticed our produce, in the kitchen had been munched on. I discovered that all our baking supplies were ransacked, oatmeal, chocolate chips, cocoa, flour, even the baking soda. Rat poops in cupboards along with spilled bags of everything.

We had to hide anything edible around the house as it sought out everything. It discovered the candles in the living room, the little pumpkin on the coffee table, the soap in the bathroom.

It pooped everywhere, on the mantle, the chairs, the window sills, the kitchen table, the shower, toilet, the sink.

My first plan was to kill it, as it was just getting too creepy. When you lie in bed at night and you hear things moving around in your kitchen and living room, it is a little over the top. When your cats and dogs are useless, you have to take it up a notch.

I bought a couple of large standard traps. The kind you put bait in and it is supposed to snap their necks. The first night I heard the thing snap shut in the middle of the night. I didn’t hear any death cries so, I figured we didn’t get him and I was right. Although, I did see what looked like blood and I thought perhaps his paw was mutilated and that he was hiding bleeding to death. I didn’t have the heart to set the trap again.

Poison was not an option so I ordered a humane trap on-line and it came within the week. I spent the next few weeks setting that damn trap with various forms of bait. The SOB always managed to get the food and not trigger the trap.

I tested it over and over again and it should have worked but it didn’t. In the meantime, every time I spied the rat it was getting bigger and leaving bigger poop. I removed all sources of water and food. I reset the trap. I was going to starve this rat and make it die from dehydration.

It kept out-smarting me. Even the dogs were getting a bit pissed as he would come out when they were across the threshold in the living room. It would scurry around the kitchen leaving it’s nasty poop everywhere. We went through boxes of tissues picking up rat poop.

Finally, just this week, after denying the rat any food, I had the thought, since the rat came in the back door that is the way he will go out again. So I put a few millet seed sprays out on the back porch just on the other side of the door and left the door cracked open so that it would be tempted to scurry out and get a quick meal. I had to do this for three nights in a row. For the first two nights, he would sit right at the edge of the threshold and reach out as far as he could to try and get the seeds but he never went completely through. Finally, last night I think hunger got the best of him. I waited patiently and eventually he made his way through the door and I was able to slam it behind his bony ass. I showed him who had the superior brain power.

This morning I cleaned house, I removed every trace of rat poop and burned incense. I feel like I went through an exorcism. This house is clean.

As I face the prospect of a new foster dog named Rosie. I started to think about the dogs who are chained and the dogs that are freed from their chains. Fences For Fido is a volunteer group that frees chain-bound dogs and allows them freedom for the first time in their lives. Not all of them are victims of abuse or neglect. However, their lives for their animals and their humans improves for all when the chain is removed.

One thing I did not know about until today, is that sometimes these dogs are surrendered rather than opting to have a fence built for the property. A side effect of trying to help. Yet, the animal will have a chance to be placed with a family that has the time and inclination to take care of that dog.

In terms of relationships, we are like chains. They can be broken and mended or not. The same way with building fences. They can be mended. They can keep things contained or keep things out. Whether we choose to break the chain or mend the fences or mend the chains and tear down the fence, is up to you.

It’s about freedom of choice and not being constrained by chains or fences.

I recently had someone comment on my a blog I made about a year ago.

This is the segment: http://silvertonbobbie.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/a-difficult-child/

I am not here to respond to that comment but it did prompt me to think about that post.

I have no shame in admitting that I have struggled with depression and anxiety. I am a recovering alcoholic. No shame in that. No shame in being an alcoholic. Many people with depression self-medicate. Depression and alcoholism are diseases. Making fun of people with a disease is mean spirited. My depression makes me angry, I can lash out but 99 % of my life is directed by kindness and love. It is my own weaknesses that makes me have compassion for others, especially the weaker souls. The underdogs.

Last year, I quit my job after a very stressful period in my personal life. My world was in crisis mode because of a family member who was also going through a very difficult time. I quit my job for several reasons but mainly so that I could deal with this issue on the home front.

My writings came from a very deep place inside of me that was dealing with a world around me going out of control. I questioned my own sanity as things unraveled around me.

I did my own moral inventory. Not so much that I thought I was a bad person but because when things go wrong, I question myself. I don’t blame others for my actions. I don’t make excuses and try to deflect the consequences.

I am my own worst enemy. As many others who struggle with depression, you are always struggling with your self-worth. Anger against yourself and the world around you is a common response.

A year ago, I had a moment in time where I blamed myself for everything wrong with my world. Who hasn’t had thoughts such as these? Who hasn’t been so overwhelmed by a current crisis and then feel as if “I can’t do anything right” ?

Those who know me, know that I am open to a fault. I expose my vulnerabilities and I do it for a reason. I want others to know that they are not alone with their despair. Because of this raw exposure of my feelings, I leave myself open to attack or ridicule. But I really don’t care. Because those who understand would only be sympathetic.

However, some prefer to see these vulnerabilities as a cry for help and attention. I must be desperate as only two or three people even read the blog. I would be better standing on a street corner with a placard stating I am mad as hell and I’m not taking it anymore.

It wasn’t about getting attention, it was about expressing my thoughts.

So to my friends, Melanie included, I thank you for your thoughtful remarks. As to the patronizing and condescending false sympathizers, you really didn’t get the point did you.

But then some people never really take a good look at themselves to even admit that they are riddled with holes of self-delusion. Their egos are wired to deflect blame to others and play the victim themselves. These types of people are false friends. And behind the arrogance, something foul is festering in their hearts to poke sticks into the open sores of others.

As the two or three people who ever read my blog know, I love animals. And you know that about two months ago, I came across the story of Patrick, the abused pitbull from New Jersey.

After reading about this horrific story of animal abuse, I became angry like many people. I googled the story and came upon a Facebook page called The Patrick Miracle. I saw postings by others who were as equally angered and moved by Patrick’s story.

For me, he reminded me of my own dog Stormy, who had also been terribly abused and starved. Seeing the pictures of Patrick brought back the memories of when I found her and the feelings of anger, pity as well as a basic instinct to want to protect.

I came across another Patrick page and then another. All equally devoted to Patrick’s story. I started to follow them all. One page in particular stated that they wanted to organize a a nationwide movement devoted to changing laws regarding animal abuse offenses and to create awareness to this cause. I wanted to help. I had to help. I had to do something more than what I had already done for the animals.

I immediately, posted on the wall of the page that I would love to work on the Oregon effort. I had no intention of leading the effort. I had no experience at lobbying on the political arena. I had only worked on the organic level of helping animals one at a time.

I had done my share of writing letters and making telephone calls in the past on animal issues that concerned me. And I wasn’t afraid of taking on an extra challenge. I never pretended to know what I was doing. I said so from the very beginning. I knew there were plenty more qualified than I to take leadership.

However, after a number of days of waiting to hear back after posting, I still did not get a response. When an email address was posted, I sent an email saying I wanted to help the cause. No response. Then everyone was told to patiently wait while the team was organizing. But more days went by without a word. The deadline for the sign-up had come and gone. The volunteer email was shut down, we were told to wait a few more days. That deadline passed. In the meantime, I noticed another Facebook group had started called Patrick the National Movement. I contacted them and asked if they were associated with the other group and if they knew how I could get involved. I was told that they were not associated with the other group as they had some negative experiences. They suggested that if I wanted to help, that I could just start my own FB page devoted to Patrick and the Patrick Movement and represent Oregon. I told them, I had never worked on animal advocacy on this level before. They said that many others had different levels of experience but that if I wanted to do it, just go ahead. So I started the Patrick Movement Oregon page.

I still followed the other page for updates but I still did not see an evidence that they were ready for volunteers from other areas.

In the meantime, many FB pages were created devoted to Patrick by all sorts of folks who wanted to make a difference.

It did not take long for me to discover that there was a lot of drama already going on that I was not even aware of. After various introductions and messages, I learned why.

I will not go into the details of this nasty drama as it is only one of many in the animal advocacy arena.Suffice it to say, by aligning myself with this group, I immediately became the enemy of the other. I got messages from people I didn’t know asking me why I had started a Patrick Movement page and that the other group had not authorized me to represent Oregon.

I noticed that many people started to ask questions on the wall of this other page. People were asking tough questions and then poof, comments disappeared this continued to go on. Finally, I also asked who was the admin of the page and what was going on, I got blocked.

I was pissed, sure but I kept my page up and started to go to work.

I learned more and more about the person who claimed to have started a movement and yet, i never saw this person actually responding. I found that odd. I saw simple questions from innocent people being answered in a snide and arrogant manner. Like they were children being told to sit quietly do as they were told.

As more time went on, I asked who was this person to tell people what they can and cannot do. I found out from many, many other people I didn’t even know how they had been treated by this person and her friends. The abusive messages, the bullying, the threats. My crock of shit radar was in high mode. Every word that seemed to come out of this person’s mouth and her followers was arrogant and dominating. I knew that I did not want to align myself with people who talked down to other people.

After weeks and now months of drama and groups aligning and rumors and gossip, nothing has changed. It is still a work in progress.

I never set out to attack this other person, her followers or her cause. However, a group of dedicated people, saw through her methods and began to speak openly about it. I even created a FB page for the rest of us to vent our feelings. Some of remarks were snarky and rude, but pretty much the truth and was after all just opinion not law.

I learned that this person accused people of stealing her idea, her TM, and stalking her simply because we gossiped about her. I also gossip about Sarah Palin but she doesn’t threaten law suits. Other folks chose to post some personal info on this person. I never went snooping for it. But it became fodder for discussion in our group. When you put yourself out there on youtube, you must expect people to take a look and comment.

It was when, this person got my FB account shut down for simply expressing an opinion about her, I got mad and I wasn’t go down without a fight.

After all this time, nothing on that other page has changed. They are still getting their ducks in a row. They accuse the rest of bullying them and stalking them when all along, they were doing the same.

Many people saw through this person’s lies and misinformation. She played the victim. And yet she was the bully. Maybe her 50,000 “followers” thinks she is the bees knees but I don’t. I don’t like people who bully others into falling in line.

I will continue to fight for the animals in Oregon and elsewhere. It is a work in progress but at least we have made progress.

16 years ago I found an abused, neglected female pitbull mix dog tied to a street post. She wasn’t the first stray dog I ever took in. But she was the most abused. She had been so traumatized in her short life that she had major fear aggression issues.

I wanted to save this girl but was concerned if I could. I had never had an animal who exhibited aggression towards everyone and everything.

Long story short, I consulted with a woman who claimed to be an expert on animal behavior as well as an active rescuer and advocate. She came to my house and met Stormy. Or came within 10 feet of her. Stormy lowered her head and gave her a deep chest growl.

This woman, told me that Stormy was a lost cause and too far gone to be rehabilitated. She was an expert after all.

The next day, I had braced myself for surrendering Stormy to the humane society. When I went downstairs to check on her and feed her, she approached me for the first time and licked my hand. I decided then that I would never listen to animal experts and just listen to the animals. They have no agenda.

Stormy passed last year at the age of 16 years. 15 of them with me. She was surrounded by her buddies Taz and Ozzie. She was loved and because I didn’t know better she had a wonderful life.

I am still a difficult child. But I fight my battles and topple bullies. I like to be the one to say the emperor has no clothes. I am the underdog. I am for the underdog. I love the underdog. If you kick any of us, I will bite you in the ass. So the best I can do is see myself the way my dog does. I am someone who loves and is loved.

Below may seem like a garbled mess but it is the documentation of the death of a dog and how a community responded to it: In Memory of Casper and all the others who should not be forgotten.

This is great, Dave. It might not help Casper but many other animals might benefit.

Perhaps we should send this to other county animal control orgs as a guideline? I’m thinking a brief history detailing the HUNDREDS of calls, emails, faxes received might open their eyes. :-)

Also press releases to state media on how a few concerned people CAN make a difference!!

Hello,
Below is a rough framework for how our community plans to deal with future occurences of the nature of Caspers suffering death. We ( what I call an Advisory Committee of the three of us) still plan to meet to tie up some lose ends, and recommend a communications & monitoring program to insure the ongoing efficacy of our community’s renewed commitment to our animals rights. (This outreach could benefit from media co-operation too).
Thank you to all who expressed concern for and interest in this tragic incident. If we can make this plan work effectively, Casper’s suffering will not have been in vain.

Dear Trish and Dave,

I feel we accomplished our original goals and it is not necessary or even ideal to draw anymore time from Klamath Falls Police Department, Klamath County Animal Control, Klamath Animal Shelter (Klamath Humane Society), or City Council.

Thanks to the full support and cooperation of the above agencies and you, the following was accomplished:
* Public visibility of Casper’s case.
·* Reenergized animal care agencies and public support for preventing cruelty to animals.
·* Existing 24/7 emergency animal rescue verified and confirmed (Klamath Animal Control “Call-Out” instructions revised and redistributed to law enforcement).
*· Existing emergency veterinary care verified and confirmed (Animal Emergency Service 2726 S. 6th St, 541-882-9005; fee-based service listed in yellow pages under Veterinarians & Hospitals).
*· Existing euthanasia service for low-to-no income individuals and families verified and confirmed (contact Animal Control and/or Klamath Animal Shelter for low pay/no pay options).
·
* Existing interagency communication on animal-care strengthened between Animal Control, Klamath Falls Police Dept., and District Attorney’s Office.

Klamath Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) will continue its efforts to integrate animal welfare and human welfare by educating and involving our community to address the whole family violence system (including child abuse, domestic and sexual violence, elder abuse, and animal abuse), presentations on the link between “Animal Cruelty & Human Violence,” helping parents use family pets to build empathy skills with their children, and *more.

MY LETTER TO KLAMATH FALLS HERALD TODAY:

I want to clarify that Dave Reed did not start an on-line campaign on his Facebook page. Dave Reed contacted me on my Facebook page the Patrick Movement Oregon. He told me what had happened and what he witnessed.

I followed up by calling the police dept to find out what had happened and did not get a clear answer but that a police report was filed.

I then initiated a letter campaign and petition for an investigation to be made. I contacted the Oregon Humane Society, Klamath Falls humane society, Animal Control in Klamath Co, the Police dept and the Klamath Falls Board of Commissioners who oversees An.Control. I also contacted your mayor and local legislators as well as the Klamath Falls Herald News.

Dave Reed reported to me that after they had a town meeting, a number of people agreed that this situation could have been handled better and that a dog should never have had to suffer a long lingering death because of lack of action. That was the whole point. Humane options were available. Animal Control and the Police could have informed these people of low cost euthanasia options.

The people, who owned Casper, in my estimation should still be on watch for animal abuse and neglect.. They have other animals on their property and are now harassing Dave Reed for speaking out. And to have the Klamath Falls Herald report that Dave is responsible for the allegations is wrong. Other neighbors also called the police to report that the animal was suffering.

The reporter who called me, was rather accusatory in his manner before he got any information from me. I think that he had his mind made up before he chose to write the story.

He asked me to retract my story. I am not a reporter. I made that clear. We were asking for an investigation of animal abuse, which it was. We were asking that the animal abuse laws of this state be enforced.

Thank you.

April 25, 2011 update

Today we heard from Dave Reed the gentleman from Klamath Falls who was the first to report about Casper the dog that was left outside to die.

In the beginning there was a lot of confusion about how this situation was handled by local authorties and we started a petition to several agencies to ask for an investigation. We also contacted the Klamath Falls Herald about this.

The letters and telephone calls had some result as there was some sort of concensus that in the future their agencies need to respond to an animal in distress instead of leaving it to die because the owner could not or would not have it euthanized. They claimed they could not afford the fee.

Since then, Dave is getting grief from these people who let Casper die alone in pain. He has also been accused of filing false charges by a Klamath Falls Herald reporter. I was also asked while I was making accusations when I didn’t know the facts. I explained to the reporter that I didn’t know all the facts and that I wasn’t a witness but that is why I was asking for an investigation.

Dave Reed is now enduring harassment for speaking out. It pisses me off that a newspaper whether on the record or off the record who take such a slanted perspective.

You can read the history of this case below.

I think this warrants an official statement to the paper if necessary to protect Dave Reed’s reputation and to admonish them for their judgement.

CASPERS LAST STAND….update. The Herald and News has published inaccurate articles and chosen to villify and demonize me for what they claim was a ‘false accusation’. A so called Grand Jury met ( in what i call a cya rush to judgment) without any eyewitness testimony and looks like just based on a partial police report and decided that there was no neglect or abuse. Member the old saw……the operation was a success ….but the patient died ? The result has been that i have been threatened and harassed for having spoken out. How dare I love animals…shame on me, huh!! Some ‘sketchy’ dude even came to my door Sunday night to weigh in. Getting uglydown here. The dog owner has threatend me with personal harm and made idiotic false reports to the police about my car being parked wrongly ( whihc they agree id not so ). The police have been great, the newspaper tyrannical and eveerybody else running for cover. Only two/three people have stepped up locally.[

Hello,

I wanted to let you know that over 600 signatures made it to Casper’s petition and Dave Reed from Klamath Falls reported that they had an impact. At the Town Meeting on Monday, there was discussion that all the agencies invlved will get together and resolve the situation so that another animal doesn’t have to die a long lingering death because of inaction. People in need should be referred to agencies that will help them ease their animal into death rather than letting it suffer.

Dave Reed will be checking back in with us.

Thanks to all of you for signing the petition.

NOTE FROM ANIMAL ABUSE INVESTIGATOR: I asked their opinion on if we did the right thing on behalf of Casper and this is what they said:

“I don’t think anyone overreacted and the situation could have been better for Casper in my opinion. In the absence of animal control there is always an emergency veterinarian that can address an animal in distress if the pet owner takes it to them for help. Relief of pain and distress for a pet owner’s animal(s) is required by law and hiding behind financial constraints is not a defense. There is always option whether it be payment options or finding a vet who will do it for the sake of the animal.”

I heard from a reporter from the Herald News in Klamath Falls and he says that he has done some looking into this situation in town. He says that he has taken a look at the police reports and he says that there was no indication of abuse. He implied that we were making false accusations against people without knowing the facts. I explained to him, that I did not witness the incident but that I had been in communication with Dave Reed a neighbor who was one of the people who called the police.

Dave felt there was concern and I acted on his behalf to start a letter writing campaign and petition so that this case would be investigated. Sue Castner another volunteer made calls also to the police and other agencies asking questions and trying to find out what went on and why this poor dog died alone. Whether or not it was freezing outside, it seemed to us a neglectful act and a rather sad one.

I want to apologize if I made a judgement in error on my actions. But part of this activity is to react to what we see might be a wrong. I realize the people who owned Casper may not have done anything wrong in their estimation but what is nothing wrong in someone’s book is neglect in anothers.

All I wanted and so did others was for someone to be accountable. It is my personal opinion that the police or animal control could have helped these people put their dog to sleep in a humane way. There are agencies who would help.

Susan Stelljes

From Sue Castner, who has been following up on this for us:

Anyone who CAN show up at the Klamath Falls City Council mtg tomorrow evening, SHOULD show up. The fact is – neighbors called and did what they could. Police DID go to the property but saw nothing wrong. There are 3 dogs tethered to poleson that property right now. I have been told that the woman living in the house is the one who MAY be the issue when it comes to the dogs. There HAVE been domestic violence calls to that address. I think those in attendance should ask for a complete investigation. ANYONE who saw the animal – cold, starved, suffering – needs to step up and SAY something. Without witnesses, all the City Council has to go on is what is written on the 911 response form. I wasn’t there. If you SAW something that was questionable, step up and SAY so. I know that’s hard – especially in a community as small as Klamath Falls. Edmund Burke famously said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” I’m sure he meant to say “good women,” too.

LETTER OR PETITION SAMPLE

We are petitioning an investigation into the death of a dog named Casper, on April 10, 2011 in Klamath Falls. Casper was a very old dog that was left outside to die by his owners. Despite, the police being called b yneighbors numerous times about a dog in distress, the police could not remove the dog from the property and animal control was closed. The dog was left behind to die.

I am one among many who find it appalling that an animal was left to die a slow death because no one could take action. This is a case of obvious animal neglect and abuse. This a crime. Why are not these people being charged withanimal neglect. It is our understanding that this family has other animals on their property as well as children. We question if the situation is safe for either.

Why is it that we cannot enforce the laws that we create? We demand an investigation into Casper’s death and that nothing like this happens again in Oregon.

We urge that animal services in Klamath County have emergency 24/7 response. We are also suggesting that a system similar to an Amber Alert for animals being initiated so that any animal control agency or humane group could save the life of an animal in distress. We suggest you call it the Casper Alert.

Yours truly,
